A masterpiece!!

Following is the couplet written by one of the most celebrated Urdu and Persian poets of the world from India .. Dabir-ul-Mulk, Najm-ud-Daula Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan .. better known as Mirza Ghalib. I tried to explain it in english.. to the best of my knowledge.. and i totally love it (not the translation, the verse)!

Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi Ke Har Khwahish Pe Dum Nikle...
Bahut Nikle Mere Armaan, Lekin Fir Bhi Kam Nikle!!

(Thousands of desires, each worth dying for…
many of them I have realized…yet I wish for more…)

Nikalna Khuld Se Aadam Ka Sunte Aaye Hai Lekin..
Bahut Be-abru Hokar, Tere Kooche Se Hum Nikle!!

(We have heard about the dismissal of Adam from Heaven,
With a more humiliation, I am leaving the street on which you live…)

Mohabbat Mein Nahi Hai Fark Jeene Aur Marne Ka..
Mohabbat Mein Nahi Hai Fark Jeene Aur Marne Ka!!
Usi Ko Dekhkar Jeete Hai, Jis Kaafir Pe Dum Nikle..!!

(When in love, there is little difference between life and death
we live by looking at the infidel who we are willing to die for)

Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi Ke Har Khwahish Pe Dum Nikle...
Bahut Nikle Mere Armaan, Lekin Fir Bhi Kam Nikle!!

Khuda Ke Waste, Parda Na Kaabe Se Utha Zaalim..
Khuda Ke Waste, Parda Na Kaabe Se Utha Zaalim..
Kahi Aisa Naa Ho Yaan Bhi Wahi Kaafir Sanam Nikle!!

(For God’s sake, don’t lift the cover off any secrets you tyrant

the infidel might turn out to be my lover)

Kahan Maikhane Ka Darwaza Ghalib, Aur Kahan Vaaiz!!
Par Itna Jaante Hain, Kal Wo Jaata Tha Ke Hum Nikle..!!

(The preacher and the bar’s entrance are way apart,

yet I saw him entering the bar as I was leaving!)

Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi Ke Har Khwahish Pe Dum Nikle...
Bahut Nikle Mere Armaan, Lekin Fir Bhi Kam Nikle!!
